Window Energy Ratings – Meeting the Requirements
The
British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC) rates windows by looking at total
energy balance and not one single factor. The total energy efficiency of
a window is calculated by a sum of the three main heat transfer mechanisms,
as detailed below;
The U Value:
- The U value is a measure of the rate of heat flow through a window
- A lower U value indicates less heat loss through the window
- The U Value for a window is affected by:
- Type and number of panes of glass
- Coatings used on the glass panes
- Gas used to fill the glazing cavity (if any)
- Glazing cavity size
- Frame material and design
- Spacer material and design.
- The G Value is a measure of the rate of solar heat gain through a window
- A Higher G Value indicates higher heat gain through the window.
- Uncontrolled air flow through a window loses heat and creates uncomfortable draughts
- Windows should be designed and fitted to minimise uncontrolled ventilation from air leakage.
These three components are given individual values, which are scaled by two constants to reflect their importance for the UK climate and the average UK house and then are combined to give the BFRC rating.
